Top 5 Emo Albums

I was thinking about running a post on Top 5 Emo albums in the 90s. I know we disagreed on what pop-punk is, so I thought this would be easier.

1) Clarity
2) Something to Wrtie Home About
3) Dear You
4) Frame and Canvas
5) Very Emergency

What do you think?

I've never heard of any of these.

Don't lie Corey...Dear You is the last real Jawbreaker album, and you gave me a vinyl copy of Something to Write Home About.

This is what sucks...these genres are so open to discussion that I basically have to throw my hands up in the air and say come hate on me.

I was joking. I listen to a lot of Dear You this weekend. I do think not having Sunny Day Real Estate's, Diary on the list is a fucking crime. Very Emergency!? Come on dude that album blew turds after one summer.

Actually, Dear You is the only one I think should be on the list.

damn, i still listen to Very Emergency!. but i'm definitely not the one that should be giving a top 5 on emo. i still don't get how 'dear you' is emo. i thinks it's closer to alternative. is it emo because of its lyrics?

i think its a pretty good list, though it does seem like its missing something from the noisier side of things (i.e. No Idea type of stuff). but it can't be denied that those are the most popular 90's emo records.

Actually I have never heard Briad, A guy named Joe made it impossible for me to like Clarity, and I gave you my copy of Something to Write Home About. I have a sneaking suspicion either I don't know exactly what emo is or I don't like it.

But I stick to my Sunny Day Real Estate comment.

I think I left out Diary because it is so easy to put that record in the list, and it's the one, that I enjoy, but like the least of the five on here. I also questioned put Designing a Nervous Breakdown by the Anniversary. Damn these genre Top 5s.

Yea but Very Emergency is more homo than emo..............Zing!

I have other thoughts: A lot of those albums seem sort of post emoish to mainstream alternative. Example Biovac seems to me more "emo" than Dear You. Same with early get up kids, such as the four minute mile ep. Yea that's a tough one.

I still listen to Very Emergency too. Possibly because amanda loves it. But it is a great record. Yeah... No Idea stuff I think is its own genre of 90s music? I dont really think Hot Water is emo. I said At The Drive In. But are they even emo either? I think you have a good list. I agree with Sunny Day though.. Diary was amazing.
So maybe Hot Water and ATDI are in some other weird category.. hmmm.

Here is my list, revised mentally. It's the same, except I'm removing Dear You and replacing it with Pedro the Lion. The only Jesus rocker I ever got into. Jawbreaker, HWM,ATDI can all be in another group. I think I might call it Pop 5 Emo Records!

your original list is the "pop 5 emo records." hwm and atdi are far less poppy than any of that stuff except maybe braid.

I JUST read this thread, and no one has said anything about Orange Rhyming Dictionary. What gives, Levi? I do believe that the term EMO was not really established or known until the end of the 90's. Right?
